There’s a point in many careers where the questions shift.

You’re no longer asking what’s next for you. You’re asking what’s next for everyone else.

If you’re leading a team but feeling overwhelmed, this may sound familiar:

  • You’re responsible for outcomes, people, or both.

  • Others look to you for clarity, direction, and calm.

  • And even when things are going well, the weight of leadership doesn’t really turn off.

From the outside, this often looks like success. From the inside, it can feel heavy.

This is one of the most common stages I see in my work as a professional and career coach, and it’s what we call the Captain season.

What It Looks Like When You’re Leading a Team but Feeling Overwhelmed

Captains are already in leadership roles. Sometimes formally, sometimes informally.

They are managers, directors, senior contributors, and trusted team leads. They keep things moving. They solve problems. They absorb pressure so others don’t have to.

If you’re in a Captain season, you may notice that:

  • You’re leading a team but feeling overwhelmed more often than you’d like

  • You care deeply about supporting others, sometimes at your own expense

  • You feel responsible for morale, performance, and outcomes

  • You’re making more decisions than ever, often without clear guidance

  • You’re capable, but stretched thin

This isn’t a lack of skill or ambition.

It’s a capacity and sustainability challenge.

Why This Stage Can Be So Draining

Many leaders respond to this pressure by pushing harder.

They stay later. They take on more. They try to be everything their team needs.

But when you’re leading a team but feeling overwhelmed, effort alone rarely fixes the problem.

What’s usually missing is not commitment. It’s structure, boundaries, and decision-making support.

According to research from the American Psychological Association, chronic workplace stress is strongly linked to burnout, disengagement, and reduced leadership effectiveness when left unaddressed.

Leadership doesn’t become heavy overnight. It becomes heavy when leaders are expected to carry responsibility without support.

How Career and Leadership Coaching Supports Captains

Career coaching at this stage looks very different than it does earlier in a career.

This is not about resumes or job searching. It’s about how you lead and how you sustain yourself while doing it.

Professional development and leadership coaching for Captains often focuses on:

  • Clarifying your leadership style and values

  • Making decisions with confidence instead of second-guessing

  • Setting boundaries that protect your energy while staying engaged

  • Navigating people challenges with more clarity and less emotional drain

  • Shifting from reactive leadership to intentional leadership

This kind of support helps leaders stay effective without burning out or disconnecting from the work they care about.

Understanding What Kind of Support You Actually Need

Over time, I noticed something consistent in my coaching work.

Clients tend to fall into a few distinct professional growth stages. Each stage benefits from a different kind of support.

Some need clarity. Some need momentum. Some need leadership tools. Some need strategic partnership.

The challenge is that many people who are leading a team but feeling overwhelmed try to solve leadership strain with solutions meant for earlier career stages.

That’s why we created the Professional Power-Up Quiz.

It’s a short, practical way to help you identify your current professional growth stage and understand what type of career or leadership coaching would be most useful right now.

If Leadership Feels Heavier Than It Should

If you’re leading a team but feeling overwhelmed, that doesn’t mean you’re failing as a leader.

It often means you’ve outgrown the way responsibility has been structured around you.

Leadership does not have to feel isolating or endlessly draining.

With the right perspective and tools, it can feel steadier, clearer, and more sustainable.

If you’d like to talk it through, you can book a complimentary strategy session. We’ll look at your role, your challenges, and what kind of support would make leadership feel more manageable.

Final Thought

Strong leaders aren’t the ones who carry everything alone.

They’re the ones who know when to seek clarity, perspective, and support so they can lead with intention instead of exhaustion.

If you’re leading a team but feeling overwhelmed, you’re not behind.

You’re simply ready for the next level of leadership growth.
